The front yard continues to sprout empty vodka bottles and the beautiful fluttering rags of plastic bags. When I was young I chugged a liter of cheap vodka before noticing the label actually read, “Vokka.” So much of life turns out to be, “Vokka” when the fine-print is read.

I hang a bird feeder from the eave of the back porch every summer. During the day it is a whir of finch and sparrow. At night I watch as little black raccoon claws reach from the rooftop to slowly slide the feeder from its hook.
